And You Thought Forklifts Were Only Used In Warehouses

Of course, warehouses are one of the most common places you’re likely to see a working forklift, but due to the versatility of these wonderful machines, forklifts are used in all sorts of industries, and some are more unusual than others.

In this short article, we look at 3 industries other than warehousing, where forklifts are regularly used, and explain a little about how they’re used in the particular industry, and some of the types and brands of forklifts used.

  • Airports

Forklifts and other types of handling equipment are essential elements to most airports, especially when it comes to moving baggage to and from an aircraft, or moving vital equipment, such as engine parts, around hangars.

Three types of handling machines/forklifts suitable for airports include:

    • Jungheinrich Stand-on/Sideways Seated Stacker 2.0t – With its high speeds, quick acceleration, a 2000kg max lifting capacity, and the ability to move equipment over long distances, the Jungheinrich Stand-on/Sideways Seated Stacker 2.0t, makes a highly efficient ground vehicle for airports of all sizes.

    • Hyster Rider Pallet Truck – Due to its ‘completely welded base frame’, the Hyster Rider Pallet Truck is one of the toughest of its kind. The truck also offers superb manoeuvrability and gives the operator the choice to sit, stand or lean whilst working.

    • Clark Electric Tow Tractor CTX40/70 – With its highly impressive pulling performance range of 4000-7000kg (depending on the model chosen), its 100% AC power system, and regenerative braking, the Clark (Seated) Electric Tow Tractor is the ideal piece of handling equipment for any airport.

  • Mines

Whether it’s open pit mining, quarrying, or strip mining, forklifts or other types of handling machines are vital for moving materials and essential equipment from one part of the mine to the other, or for retrieving materials from mined areas.

Two types of forklifts suitable for mining include:

    • Hyster – H2.0-3.5XT models – Forklifts in the XT series are extremely durable, easy to service, and are ideal for use in many industries, but particularly mining, due to the rough terrain pneumatic tyres, the extra tough engine cover, and the Hyster Stability System, designed to reduce truck sway over uneven ground.

    • Hyster – H8-18XD models – Forklifts in this series offer a lifting capacity range of 8000 - 18000kg, have excellent all-round visibility, operator-friendly cabins, and are designed for use in exceptionally tough environments, particularly certain types of mining.

  • Farms

Forklifts play a critical role in modern farming, especially large-scale farming where produce is held in a warehouse environment. Certain types of forklifts can also be used to sow seeds, and, with special attachments, adapted for harvesting.

Two types of forklift suitable for farming include:

    • COMBi-RT Poultry Forklift – With its extra large tyres, all-wheel traction, 300mm ground clearance, and compact turning circle, this forklift is perfect for tough agricultural environments, particularly poultry farming.

    • COMBi-LR Live Receiving Forklift – Offering excellent manoeuvrability, and fully hydrostatic drive, the COMBi-LR is the ideal machine for indoor and outdoor working, particularly on the often rough terrain of a farming environment.
