Fork Lift Association & Thorough Examination

What are forklifts used for?

The answer to the question 'what are forklifts used for?' seems straightforward at first – forklifts are used for lifting and moving things, predominantly in warehouses, from one place to another.

But, to look a little deeper, forklifts, whether diesel, LPG or electric, play all sorts of roles in many modern workplaces, and some of those roles are more unconventional than you might think.

In this short article, we’ve listed 5 uses for forklifts, from the usual to the unusual. If you enjoy reading the article, please share it to let friends and colleagues know more about the wonderful adaptability of the modern forklift.

In warehouses

You don’t get more obvious than warehouses, the places where forklifts are everywhere, lifting, moving, loading, and unloading pallets all day long. But, the question to ask is, ‘why’ are forklifts used in warehouses? The simple answer is, the versatility of a forklift including the extreme lifting capabilities, the reach, the manoeuvrability, and the side-loading abilities etc., make warehouses far safer, more efficient, and more productive environments.

On construction sites

Construction is another fairly obvious use for a forklift, but the importance of a forklift or a fleet of forklifts on a construction site, a quarry, or in a mining area, can’t be underestimated.

A forklift (particularly a rough terrain forklift) will be responsible for lifting, loading, unloading and transporting bricks, blocks, and a vast array of other building materials, safely and efficiently, across ground which is likely to be uneven.

In recycling centres

Recycling is vital in the modern world, and the sector is constantly growing as we intensify our attempts to be more sustainable, to protect wildlife, our food sources, and to create a better future for us all.

But, all this extra recycling needs to be organised, lifted, moved, loaded and unloaded, and this is where the versatile modern forklift comes into its own, especially when equipped with a bail clamp device, to handle the often huge bails of used plastic in recycling centres.

For ploughing snow

Maybe not so much in the UK in recent times, but in countries across the world where heavy snowfalls are commonplace, a forklift with a blade attachment, makes the perfect snow plough.

This ability of a forklift is particularly useful in places such as airport runways, mining areas, carparks, seaports, and any other commercial area that needs to be cleared of snow, prior to work being carried out.

Sweeping

Not the most likely job that comes to mind when thinking of a forklift, but many forklifts can be equipped with rotating sweeper attachments, that include brushes stiff enough to clean up factory floors of all types of debris and waste, such as wood shavings, or metal swarf etc.
