How do I become a forklift driver?

It’s the one warehouse job that looks the most fun, and driving a forklift does have a fun element. But, on the serious side, to become a competent forklift driver requires a certain amount of training and a specific skillset.

What is a forklift driver?

Simply put, a forklift driver is a person responsible for the safe transportation of palleted goods around a warehouse or a similar storage facility.

But, as a forklift driver, there are other duties and skills vital to the role, including:

  • A basic understanding of the vehicle and being able to carry out maintenance and checks.

  • Knowing how to ensure loads are secure.

  • Good spatial awareness (being aware of your surroundings)

  • Good communication skills and being able to work closely with others.

  • Being able to understand and interpret written instructions.

  • Knowing how to keep records and recall information.

  • Having a thorough understanding of health and safety practices and laws.

Routes to becoming a forklift driver

People become forklift drivers in various ways, such as getting an apprenticeship, by going to college, or simply applying directly to an employer and training on the job.

Getting an apprenticeship

Apprenticeships are a great way to get a foot in the door of many different industries, and also a way to learn new skills, such as how to drive a forklift truck.

As long as you’re over 16, enthusiastic, willing to learn, and have at least 2 GCSEs (grades 9-3) you’ll have a good chance of getting accepted.

An apprenticeship will be just like working in a normal job, except you’ll be required to attend college or training once or twice a week.

Taking the college route

If you decide on going to college, you’ll need at least 2 GCSEs and be expected to complete a Level 2 Certificate in Forklift Truck Operations.

Once you have the qualification, you’re free to apply to various companies, but bear in mind, many companies require you to carry a CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card.

Applying for a job without qualifications

Many companies take on forklift drivers who have no qualifications, as long as they show enthusiasm and a willingness to work hard and learn on the job. A good employer will then provide the right training to help you gain the relevant qualifications.

How much does a forklift driver get paid?

According to construction careers specialist, Go Construct, the average salary for a forklift driver ranges from £17,000 - £30,000 over a typical 44-46 hour week.

These figures vary depending on your level of experience, qualifications and the hours you work.
